Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-
Spoilers Ahead!!! This is your warning!
I saw this movie in the theater and i have to say I am overall incredibly confident in the direction that this series and this alternate Universal Century timeline will go in. The cold open to episode 1 of 0079 and it starting relatively the same (with updated and upgraded animation) before being thrown off by Char getting in the Gundam was incredibly clever and I really enjoyed it because at first I was like "oh is this like a trailer for a remaster or something???" before going "OH THIS IS THE MOVIE WOAHHHH". I think that them spending like... 30 or something minutes just setting up how the timeline is different and the worldbuilding and establishing stuff is really clever and shows a lot of promise in the series and their dedication to telling a story that is well-written and cared about by the staff working on it.
For real, I think an au of UC directed by the guy who made Evangelion will be really interesting. I am very excited to see where it goes. I am by no means an eva fan, but I do trust Anno to tell a compelling story.
I loved how much this felt like a love letter to the beginning of Gundam, seeing these beautifully redone stills to the opening of Gundam and the wonderful recreations of iconic things like the Gundam standing for the first time feel like such genuine love letters to the series that really started off the mecha genre craze is so beautiful and lovely. Hearing the iconic music from 0079 with those beautiful trumpets was genuinely something that I teared up at hearing in a theater. It was just a really nice theater experience.
I enjoyed seeing Char get his own stolen red Gundam, and I liked that the mavs are sort of Pacific Rim-esque with drift compatibility, but it's a very interesting thing to link it to newtypes and stuff. I really appreciate that there is ANOTHER yaoi for Char Aznable with Challia Bull I think thats genuinely hysterical. I do miss Amuro he is like my darling boy protagonist but I'm excited to see the new protagonists because they seem fun and unique. I think they are a cute little throuple. The Gundam fights are also beautifully animated and choreographed I was having a blast watching the movie. AND CHAR WAS THERE WE LOOOOVE THAT GUY. I MEAN WE DONT BUT LIKE. WOJACK POINTS. I KNOW HIM.
The story seems really beautiful and I like that it's focusing on the people who live in space and such and how that even though Zeon won nothing has changed for the spacenoids or anything. It's just the same oppression under a different name and I'm excited to see how they expand on that in the series.
I suppose I am slightly nervous because I am admittedly a bit of an Evangelion hater so I am always a little nervous watching stuff about mechs made by the people who made Eva but I have faith based on this movie that it is a genuine love letter to the genre as well as the series that popularized it and something about that coming from the people who made one of the most widely popular mecha anime is very beautiful to me too. And if nothing else I WILL BE GETTING THE MODEL KITS BECAUSE HOLY SHIT. MARK MY WORDS THEY LOOK BEAUTIFUL I'M OBSESSED.
Overall a great movie and i definitely recommend it to any fans of the UC timeline of Gundam (so like most Gundam fans... it is the main timeline. lol). or anyone who just likes good mecha stuff like i think it would probably hold up just as well on its own without knowledge of UC since it starts at episode 1 of 0079 and changes it to do it's own thing!
